Tyra Hutchens, M.D., begins by briefly discussing his family background and childhood growing up in Newberg, Oregon. He goes on to talk about his education, earning a B.A. from the University of Oregon and then a medical degree at the University of Oregon Medical School (1945) as well as completing internships at the Minneapolis General Hospital and the American Lake Veterans Administration Hospital. Hutchens then discusses his time as Chair of the Department of Clinical pathology at the University of Oregon Medical School, beginning in 1962. He describes the transition of the medical school to a university system as OHSU as well as the relationship of the university with the city of Portland. Hutchens concludes by talking about his family, including trying to balance the demands of medical school with family life.
