A key enabling component of these observatories is data assimilation (DA), which integrates sparse observations with numerical models to improve estimates of ocean state, uncertainty, and observing system design. Despite its promise, widespread DA adoption in coastal systems has been limited by computational cost, model nonlinearity, and logistical challenges. This dissertation presents fast, model-independent DA methods and demonstrates their application in the Columbia River estuary and plume, enabling multi-year hindcasts, analysis of ecologically important circulation features, optimization of observational arrays, and development of a real-time forecast system suitable for broad coastal observatory implementation. 000000156 540__ $$fCC BY 000000156 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000000156 650__ $$aEstuaries$$040221 000000156 651__ $$aOregon$$041094 000000156 651__ $$aUnited States--Columbia River$$044429 000000156 6531_ $$acolumbia river plume 000000156 6531_ $$acolumbia river estuary (oregon and wash.) 000000156 6531_ $$aobserving system optimization 000000156 6531_ $$akalman filter 000000156 6531_ $$acoastal observatory 000000156 6531_ $$akalman filtering 000000156 6531_ $$adata assimilation 000000156 691__ $$aOGI School of Science and Engineering$$041365 000000156 692__ $$aDepartment of Environmental and Biomolecular Systems$$041414 000000156 7001_ $$aFrolov, Sergey$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000000156 7201_ $$aBaptista, António$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eAdvisor 000000156 8564_ $$958c61165-bbdb-426b-84b5-e2a34232f1e0$$s3829605$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/156/files/156_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$23516012d9547aa8edf7d78a50a5ffc7e$$31 000000156 901__ $$a<p>These documents are archival records.
