This work examines the acid–base chemistry governing the interdependent gas/particle partitioning of nicotine and ammonia in mainstream tobacco smoke, motivated by evidence that ammonia-producing additives are used to enhance smoke “impact.” Using established acid–base and partitioning theory, equations describing the coupled behavior of nicotine and ammonia were derived, and key partitioning and activity coefficients were estimated from existing data. The model predicts a linear correlation between nicotine and ammonia partitioning, improving understanding of how additives influence nicotine chemistry and smoke characteristics. 000000021 540__ $$fCC BY 000000021 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000000021 650__ $$aAmmonia$$014606 000000021 650__ $$aNicotine$$022904 000000021 650__ $$aTobacco$$027130 000000021 650__ $$aTobacco Smoke Pollution$$027132 000000021 650__ $$aTobacco Use Disorder$$027133 000000021 691__ $$aOGI School of Science and Engineering$$041365 000000021 692__ $$aOGI Department of Environmental Science and Engineering$$041415 000000021 7001_ $$aChen, Cai$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000000021 7201_ $$aPankow, James$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eAdvisor 000000021 8564_ $$9458e13e1-ec7c-44e3-b31e-43a14dda597d$$s1499462$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/21/files/21_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$2ce2a9b89b0071d281aea2f30d69400cd$$31 000000021 901__ $$a<p>These documents are archival records.
