This dissertation examined whether top‑down and bottom‑up attentional mechanisms modulate occipital activation in early blind (EB) individuals and whether such modulation relates to enhanced non‑visual performance. Using event‑related fMRI and auditory, tactile, and bimodal oddball tasks, results showed that both salient distractors and selectively attended targets evoked occipital responses in EB participants, but not sighted controls. Findings indicate that attentional processes contribute to occipital cross‑modal reorganization and may underlie behavioral advantages observed in early blindness. 000002166 540__ $$fCC BY 000002166 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000002166 650__ $$aOccipital Lobe$$023130 000002166 650__ $$aBlindness$$015641 000002166 650__ $$aPhysical Stimulation$$024109 000002166 650__ $$aAttention$$015203 000002166 650__ $$aMagnetic Resonance Imaging$$021747 000002166 650__ $$aVisual Cortex$$027861 000002166 650__ $$aNeuroimaging$$039660 000002166 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000002166 692__ $$aDepartment of Behavioral Neuroscience$$041394 000002166 7001_ $$aWeaver, Kurt$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000002166 8564_ $$9cfbc75cc-1db4-4388-a435-f7522e9e39e0$$s3019158$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/2166/files/2895_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$2ea3152fd828871427f859c735e275d24$$31 000002166 901__ $$a<p>These documents are archival records.
