This challenge has persisted despite rapid advances in computer technologies. This is largely due to the significant complexity of medical work. This complexity can be represented as an intricate web of collaboration, communication, and situational awareness. The work presented in this thesis explores one aspect of the challenge of medical documentation: medical orders. The project is a first step toward examining examination of the use of speech recognition technology for order entry. A computer script written in PERL was created and tested using a random sample of handwritten orders from several intensive care units at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital with the goal of categorizing the orders into logical groups. 000002491 540__ $$fCC BY 000002491 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000002491 650__ $$aIntensive Care Units$$020904 000002491 650__ $$aNatural Language Processing$$022716 000002491 650__ $$aMedical Order Entry Systems$$036354 000002491 650__ $$aSpeech$$026226 000002491 650__ $$aMedical Records$$021947 000002491 650__ $$aSoftware$$026159 000002491 650__ $$aCommunication$$016935 000002491 650__ $$aDocumentation$$018012 000002491 650__ $$aPractice Patterns, Physicians'$$024114 000002491 651__ $$aOregon--Portland$$041692 000002491 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000002491 692__ $$aDivision of Medical Informatics and Outcomes Research$$041423 000002491 7001_ $$aFournier, Lara$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000002491 7201_ $$aAsh, Joan$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eMentor 000002491 7201_ $$aStavri, Zoe$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eMentor 000002491 8564_ $$9d7f3981b-c5ca-4cea-9b5f-3d4e511c240d$$s4670075$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/2491/files/3232_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$27882979e8abaaa161515b00a226ee076$$31 000002491 905__ $$a/rest/prod/fj/23/62/27/fj2362271 000002491 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:2491$$pstudent-work 000002491 980__ $$aBiomedical Informatics
