This dissertation examined combined versus independent effects of nicotine and ethanol on locomotor stimulation, conditioned place preference (CPP), sensitization, and nicotinic receptor regulation in mice. Nicotine enhanced ethanol-induced stimulation in ethanol-sensitive genotypes but did not increase ethanol reward or alter nAChR density. Combined drug effects on sensitization were dose-dependent and context-specific. Additionally, varenicline, a partial nAChR agonist, attenuated ethanol-induced stimulation and expression of sensitization but not CPP, suggesting its potential to reduce acute and neuroadaptive ethanol effects without impacting cue-related behaviors. 000002753 540__ $$fCC BY 000002753 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000002753 650__ $$aNicotine$$022904 000002753 650__ $$aEthanol$$014406 000002753 650__ $$aNicotinic Agonists$$031041 000002753 650__ $$aMice$$036842 000002753 650__ $$aTobacco Use Cessation Devices$$039946 000002753 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000002753 692__ $$aDepartment of Behavioral Neuroscience$$041394 000002753 7001_ $$aGubner, Noah$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000002753 7201_ $$aPhillips, Tamara$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eMentor 000002753 8564_ $$9a4f1dfc3-875a-4803-aaf7-8e4be3ae90c0$$s3257077$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/2753/files/3507_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$20f88f62c287c2971c0018d516e190201$$31 000002753 905__ $$a/rest/prod/0r/96/73/95/0r967395n 000002753 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:2753$$pstudent-work 000002753 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
