The KD may increase risk for deficiency of carnitine, a nutrient required for fatty acid oxidation and ketone production. Although carnitine is supplemented during KD therapy by many medical centers, supplemental carnitine may be cost-prohibitive, poorly tolerated, and possibly unnecessary. This study aimed to evaluate: 1) the impact of the KD on plasma carnitine concentrations, 2) possible correlations between plasma carnitine and β9 hydroxybutyrate concentrations, and 3) the association between plasma carnitine concentration and reduction in seizure frequency and number of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) prescribed. 000002882 540__ $$fCC BY 000002882 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000002882 650__ $$aCarnitine$$016164 000002882 650__ $$aEpilepsy$$018531 000002882 650__ $$aSeizures$$025832 000002882 650__ $$aDiet, Carbohydrate-Restricted$$036410 000002882 650__ $$aDiet, Ketogenic$$038297 000002882 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000002882 692__ $$aGraduate Programs in Human Nutrition$$041470 000002882 7001_ $$aRiebold, Jane$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000002882 7201_ $$aStadler, Diane$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eMentor 000002882 8564_ $$983df3f97-abcd-4fc7-af6f-87859529ce3a$$s7651700$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/2882/files/3651_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$2b7a2e6e2d1fc65b5596479c5c610b430$$31 000002882 905__ $$a/rest/prod/rb/68/xc/03/rb68xc03x 000002882 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:2882$$pstudent-work 000002882 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
