Many pharmaceuticals and personal care products are considered contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) due to their bioactive properties. Among these, metformin—the most commonly prescribed drug for treatment of type 2 diabetes—has been reported at high concentrations (μg L-1) in stream, lake, and estuary surface waters in the United States. However, a propensity for broad-scale CEC surveys has prevented seasonal and spatial monitoring of metformin in river systems. Moreover, the effect of metformin in river food webs remains poorly explored, despite its known action on conserved eukaryotic enzymes (AMPK/SnRK1/SNF1). This project comprised the first spatiotemporal characterization of metformin in a high-discharge river system and examined the effects of metformin on aquatic primary producers. 000003069 540__ $$fCC BY 000003069 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000003069 650__ $$aMetformin$$022128 000003069 650__ $$aWater Quality$$039802 000003069 650__ $$aRivers$$035650 000003069 650__ $$aPhytoplankton$$024135 000003069 650__ $$aPrescription Drugs$$038366 000003069 650__ $$aLakes$$039694 000003069 650__ $$aEstuaries$$040221 000003069 650__ $$aEcosystem$$030218 000003069 650__ $$aDiabetes Mellitus, Type 2$$017675 000003069 651__ $$aUnited States--Columbia River$$044429 000003069 6531_ $$aalgae contaminant 000003069 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000003069 692__ $$aInstitute of Environmental Health$$041473 000003069 7001_ $$aCummings, Brittany$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$10000-0003-0963-6526 000003069 7201_ $$aNeedoba, Jacob$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eCo-Mentor 000003069 7201_ $$aPeterson, Tawnya$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eAdvisor$$eMentor 000003069 8564_ $$9f4a055eb-be5c-472a-a628-6ec77ae6b44d$$s4526135$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/3069/files/4002_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$2abc44da931ad9e521b4e38a7a221a60c$$31 000003069 905__ $$a/rest/prod/h1/28/nd/94/h128nd94x 000003069 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:3069$$pstudent-work 000003069 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
