AB  - In this interview, Dr. Harold Osterud describes his involvement in the development of public health programs and education in Oregon. Born in Virginia, his father was faculty at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Osterud took his own M.D. there. He served in WWII and Korea. He came to Oregon and interned at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, then worked in public health around the state. He was Health officer in Coos Bay, then in Lane Co. was first medical examiner in the state, as well as physician for the jail and juvenile court. In 1961 he joined University of Oregon Medical School faculty with the Crippled Children's Division and Public Health Dept. He later took over the department. He expanded outreach to rural areas of the state in the 1970s, and in the 1980s collaborated with the University of Washington and Portland State University to create a joint Master's in Public Health program.
