To investigate community concerns about high MS prevalence near the former Hanford nuclear site, this study estimated MS prevalence in twelve counties surrounding Spokane, Washington, from 1998 to 2003. Medical records from two major MS care systems identified 1,088 unique cases; capture‑recapture analysis estimated 1,626 total cases. Crude MS prevalence was 196.8 per 100,000 adults, with a higher estimate of 294.1 per 100,000 using capture‑recapture methods. County‑level analyses showed an association between MS prevalence and per‑capita income. Findings confirm elevated MS prevalence in the region and highlight the need for expanded diagnostic resources, improved access to care, and further investigation incorporating additional data sources. 000000324 540__ $$fCC BY 000000324 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000000324 650__ $$aEpidemiologic Methods$$018517 000000324 650__ $$aMultiple Sclerosis$$022506 000000324 650__ $$aPrevalence$$028804 000000324 650__ $$aMedical Records$$021947 000000324 650__ $$aHealth Services Accessibility$$019904 000000324 651__ $$aWashington$$041180 000000324 6531_ $$acapture-recapture method 000000324 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000000324 692__ $$aDepartment of Public Health and Preventive Medicine$$041444 000000324 7001_ $$aHan, Ying$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000000324 7201_ $$aLambert, William$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eAdvisor 000000324 8564_ $$9b188eee4-c2c4-4ea3-861d-016a070bcc36$$s381679$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/324/files/325_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$288c604ba9a1f65f8be9b270a389d57f0$$31 000000324 905__ $$a/rest/prod/7m/01/bk/72/7m01bk723 000000324 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:324$$pstudent-work 000000324 956__ $$aGet Accessible Copy$$uhttps://ohsu.libwizard.com/f/requestaccessibledocument 000000324 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
