Despite their prevalence, little systematic work has examined how these systems function or how best to improve them. This dissertation defines a formal framework based on shared properties of pipelines across domains such as parsing, speech recognition, machine translation, and image classification. It introduces quantitative metrics describing constraint characteristics and demonstrates that commonly used measures of constraint quality are poor predictors of performance. The findings show that systematically modifying constraint properties can meaningfully affect pipeline performance, offering broadly applicable guidance for analyzing and improving pipeline systems. 000000368 540__ $$fCC BY 000000368 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000000368 650__ $$aAlgorithms$$014437 000000368 650__ $$aNatural Language Processing$$022716 000000368 650__ $$aLinguistics$$021521 000000368 650__ $$aMethods$$022159 000000368 650__ $$aComputers$$016992 000000368 6531_ $$aautomatic speech recognition 000000368 6531_ $$apipeline 000000368 6531_ $$apattern recognition 000000368 6531_ $$acomputer science 000000368 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000000368 692__ $$aDepartment of Science and Engineering$$041447 000000368 692__ $$aCenter for Spoken Language Understanding$$041388 000000368 7001_ $$aHollingshead, Kristy$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000000368 7201_ $$aRoark, Brian$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eAdvisor 000000368 8564_ $$94b5b600d-6ce4-45c9-8bd8-0dfbb03123bd$$s1387242$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/368/files/369_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$204c63d54359f32d056fc7a0aa5212fcb$$31 000000368 905__ $$a/rest/prod/5d/86/p0/23/5d86p023d 000000368 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:368$$pstudent-work 000000368 956__ $$aGet Accessible Copy$$uhttps://ohsu.libwizard.com/f/requestaccessibledocument 000000368 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
