Using gramicidin perforated‑patch recordings in mouse brain slices, this study examined the ionic basis of complex spikes and regulation of the glycine reversal potential (Egly_\text{gly}gly). Complex spikes required both sodium and calcium currents, with specific calcium channel types shaping the slow depolarization and calcium‑activated potassium channels regulating repolarization. Complex spiking also produced calcium‑dependent intracellular acidification, leading to a negative shift in Egly_\text{gly}gly through activation of the Na+^++-driven Cl−^-−/HCO3−_3^-3− exchanger. This shift likely provides feedback inhibition to limit excessive spiking. 000000388 540__ $$fCC BY 000000388 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000000388 650__ $$aAction Potentials$$014197 000000388 650__ $$aCalcium Channels$$028229 000000388 650__ $$aPhysiology$$024123 000000388 650__ $$aCochlear Nucleus$$030119 000000388 650__ $$aChlorides$$016523 000000388 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000000388 692__ $$aVollum Institute$$041509 000000388 7001_ $$aKim, Yuil$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000000388 7201_ $$aTrussell, Laurence$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eMentor 000000388 8564_ $$91a36de3a-2d46-4b91-b745-5afa3453e523$$s15940101$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/388/files/389_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$2c9014f7db6276e5c0f781a7664fb451d$$31 000000388 905__ $$a/rest/prod/sb/39/78/29/sb397829v 000000388 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:388$$pstudent-work 000000388 956__ $$aGet Accessible Copy$$uhttps://ohsu.libwizard.com/f/requestaccessibledocument 000000388 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
