Rural-residing Veterans are more likely to be affected by this requirement as they are more likely to smoke, less likely to quit, and experience challenges accessing specialty care. The incentive of a desired surgery could be an opportune time (“teachable moment”) to assist patients in quitting smoking. Our study examined experiences and perceptions related to this cessation requirement to inform development of a peri-operative smoking cessation intervention. 000041617 540__ $$fCC BY 000041617 542__ $$fIn copyright - joint owners 000041617 650__ $$aSmoking Cessation$$029204 000041617 650__ $$aUnited States Department of Veterans Affairs$$027579 000041617 650__ $$aRural Population$$025633 000041617 650__ $$aOrthopedic Procedures$$031751 000041617 650__ $$aTobacco$$027130 000041617 650__ $$aVeterans$$027802 000041617 6531_ $$aelective surgery 000041617 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000041617 692__ $$aDepartment of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation$$041436 000041617 7001_ $$aSong Mayeda, Marissa$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000041617 7001_ $$aGolden, Sara$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000041617 7001_ $$aGundle, Kenneth$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000041617 7001_ $$aBailey, Steffani$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000041617 711__ $$aResearch Week$$uOregon Health and Science University$$d2023 000041617 7201_ $$aYoung, Allison$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$eCollaborator$$7Personal 000041617 7201_ $$aUnger, Stephanie$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$eCollaborator$$7Personal 000041617 8564_ $$962f67f37-56e8-491a-8db9-3686ddfce307$$s88705$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/41617/files/ResearchWeek.2023.Mayeda.Marissa.pdf 000041617 941__ $$b2024-03-29$$cgorton@ohsu.edu$$eSubmitter 000041617 980__ $$aResearch Week 000041617 981__ $$aPublished$$b2023-08-21
