Dr. Ray Vaughn Pierce was the nation's leading seller of mail-order patent medicines. Trained as a doctor, he created his first medicine, "Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription," in 1867. Dr. Pierce said of his Favorite Prescription: "It makes weak women strong and sick women well." The medicine claimed to cure nervousness, backache, headache, sleeplessness, mental anxiety, and despondency. And no wonder – before 1890, this medicine was said to contain mostly alcohol and opium tincture. 000042260 542__ $$fPublic Domain 000042260 650__ $$aWomen's Health$$029122 000042260 650__ $$aPatent medicines$$042216 000042260 650__ $$aMenstruation$$022042 000042260 650__ $$aNonprescription Drugs$$018093 000042260 655__ $$amedicine container$$042213 000042260 7102_ $$aPierce's Proprietaries$$042229 000042260 8564_ $$9dece862e-9336-44d5-a139-02b9b81946f8$$s2427669$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/42260/files/PPC-XXXX.148_Dr-Pierces-Favorite-Prescription_02.jpg 000042260 8564_ $$9629ce4a3-80ae-4eb8-900e-e1173821a622$$s2522567$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/42260/files/PPC-XXXX.148_Dr-Pierces-Favorite-Prescription_01.jpg 000042260 980__ $$aHistorical Artifacts
