The culture of hospitals in general shifted as well, which before then had primarily reserved care in these facilities to the poor, with doctors treating wealthier patients in their own homes. The hospital was purchased in the 1940s by physicians and surgeons themselves, which was a rarity, and it became a community-driven hospital, contributing to the expansion of services and innovations of care, including supporting industrial workers and being one of the first institutions whose team performed open heart surgery. Additionally, there was an alliance between two other hospitals, going on to create the Health Network of America in 1982. 000042307 542__ $$fIn Copyright 000042307 600__ $$aCoffey, Robert Calvin, 1869-1933$$010674 000042307 650__ $$aPhysicians$$024116 000042307 650__ $$aSurgeons$$040793 000042307 650__ $$aHospitals, General$$020344 000042307 650__ $$aSurgical Procedures, Operative$$026655 000042307 650__ $$aOccupational Medicine$$023139 000042307 651__ $$aOregon--Portland$$041692 000042307 7102_ $$aPhysicians and Surgeons Hospital$$042315 000042307 791__ $$eDescribes$$tCatalog record$$whttps://librarysearch.ohsu.edu/permalink/01ALLIANCE_OHSU/1do4asu/alma999935201858$$2URL 000042307 8564_ $$9c66ace8c-4c38-40ac-bc4a-ecc99feeee91$$s42976545$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/42307/files/WX28.AO7.P578_PSH-Our-History.pdf 000042307 901__ $$aArchival records are historical in nature and products of the time and society in which they were created.
