      abstract = {Nurses make up the majority of professionals in the  healthcare industry and fulfill a vital role in patient  intake and ongoing care, and yet there has been a distinct  and drastic shortage of nurses dating back to early 1998.  This booklet examines nurse shortages in Oregon and  Washington, as well as the reasons for those gaps in care  and the detrimental effects on the profession. Causes of  the shortage stem from factors such as an increase in  administrative duties and tasks in different departments;  high turnover; longer hiring processes; a smaller  population of recent graduate-level nurses and a preference  for experienced professionals; disappointing salaries; and  an inability to maintain a healthy work-life balance that  leads to high incidences of burnout. Published in 2001,  this booklet warns of a trend in the coming decades if  these issues are not addressed, and offers some short- and  long-term solutions to minimize the severity of ongoing  shortages.},
