Though this period of over 80 years was marked by innovations in education and medical processes, folklore and superstitions were still prevalent. This is exemplified by one anecdote of a farmer--showing concern for a man after a wood-chopping accident--who worried that if the offending ax was not buried, the wound would not heal. Also included in these accounts are anecdotes about common ailments like typhoid, malaria, and smallpox, and harrowing stories of dentistry, debilitating epidemics, and midwifery practices. This paper was read before the University of Oregon Medical School History Club at the home of Dr. Olof Larsell. 000042362 542__ $$fPublic Domain 000042362 600__ $$aGood Samaritan Hospital & Medical Center (Portland, Or.)$$010910 000042362 650__ $$aHistory, 19th Century$$036225 000042362 650__ $$aHistory, 20th Century$$036226 000042362 650__ $$aHospital Medicine$$040405 000042362 650__ $$aHistory of Medicine$$020255 000042362 650__ $$aMidwifery$$022307 000042362 650__ $$aDentistry$$017565 000042362 650__ $$aTyphoid Fever$$027525 000042362 650__ $$aFolklore$$019161 000042362 650__ $$aSuperstitions$$026629 000042362 651__ $$aOregon$$041094 000042362 651__ $$aOregon--Columbia County$$042858 000042362 655__ $$apresentations (communicative events)$$042011 000042362 7001_ $$aRoss, John M.$$042383 000042362 791__ $$eIs described by$$tCatalog record$$whttps://librarysearch.ohsu.edu/permalink/01ALLIANCE_OHSU/19jn9i0/alma993498001858$$2URL 000042362 8564_ $$9c8e563cf-42c9-483b-83c8-440a16c8302c$$s7792995$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/42362/files/R131.8-R82-1940_ross_hist-med-columbia-county_1940.pdf 000042362 901__ $$aArchival records are historical in nature and products of the time and society in which they were created.
