TY - GEN N2 - The etiology of adolescent internalizing psychopathology (e.g., anxiety and depression) is not yet fully understood, and for that reason it has been difficult to identify reliable biomarkers that predict symptoms. This dissertation work establishes both neurobiological and psychosocial predictors of internalizing psychopathology in adolescence by leveraging several advanced statistical and machine learning techniques in a large and demographically diverse sample. Aim 1 of this project uses resting-state fMRI data to identify a profile of functional connectivity (a 'polyneuro risk score') that is associated with internalizing symptoms, whereas Aim 2 focuses on combining psychosocial, environmental, and behavioral variables to predict symptoms. The findings from these two analyses highlight the utility of multivariate modeling strategies for prediction and also help to reconcile decades of prior literature examining key factors related to the emergence of anxiety and depression in youth.
