TY - GEN AB - Elena Andresen, Ph.D., reflects on her upbringing in Seattle and the foundational education that first led her to oceanography, then to studying Spanish and history. She shifted to epidemiology, partly by chance after applying to a research assistant position at the University of Washington, because it provided the enticing benefit of health insurance. Beating out other applicants who already had been educated in epidemiology, she stood out due to her real-world background in managing research and gathering data. From this experience, she went on to pursue a Ph.D. in epidemiology, focusing her career on aging and the outcomes of chronic diseases and disabilities, rather than solely the prevention of them. In addition to being an educator and mentor, Andresen has served in administrative leadership roles, including as interim dean of the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health and as the provost of OHSU.
