This marked the 65th anniversary of the vote to fund a “Pauper’s Farm,” a place where those who required medical and other additional support could be taken care of. That farm would eventually become the Multnomah County Hospital, followed by construction of a new facility decades later on Marquam Hill. Smith goes through some of the more notable points in the hospital’s history, including a scandal in 1870 with a former inmate and the then-keeper of the farm, as well as stories of some of the healthcare professionals who worked there.
