000042497 520__ $$aCourtney M. Smith read this text before the Medical History Club of the University of Oregon Medical School on March 30, 1933. This marked the 65th anniversary of the vote to fund a “Pauper’s Farm,” a place where those who required medical and other additional support could be taken care of. That farm would eventually become the Multnomah County Hospital, followed by construction of a new facility decades later on Marquam Hill. Smith goes through some of the more notable points in the hospital’s history, including a scandal in 1870 with a former inmate and the then-keeper of the farm, as well as stories of some of the healthcare professionals who worked there.
