She played a significant role in advancing nursing education in Oregon and was a pioneer in advanced practice nursing. In this interview, she discusses her education and training at UCLA, where she earned her BA, master’s, and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner’s (PNP) certificate. Hellings recounts experiences as an educator, a healthcare professional, and an administrator throughout times of great development within the program, including helping to start the nurse practitioner program at OHSU. The interview also covers the School of Nursing’s Breastfeeding Program and the Nursing Faculty Practice Grant, both of which Hellings was extensively involved in. In this interview, Hellings looks back on her formation as a pediatric nurse practitioner and her advocacy for the legitimacy of the profession within OHSU's administration. She speaks about her relationships with significant figures at the University, including Dean of Nursing Carol Lindeman, Dr. Julian S. "Dutch" Reinschmidt, and Registrar Dick Speight.
