Autistics often face difficulties in processing sensory information, affecting behavior and social interactions. Existing literature on sensory-based interventions in psychiatric units is limited, necessitating targeted interventions for Autistic adults. Educational sessions were conducted with nursing staff, with pre-intervention and post-intervention surveys assessing staff perceptions. Results demonstrated a medium effect size (0.382) and a twenty percent improvement (p = 0.001) in survey scores, indicating enhanced knowledge and comfort in sensory-based care. Qualitative analysis highlighted barriers, including a lack of education, bureaucratic challenges in obtaining tools, and concerns about increased workload. The project demonstrated the positive impact of the intervention, emphasizing the need for widespread, specialized training and standardized toolkits to support sensory-based care. Further research is warranted to deepen understanding and promote sustained improvements in providing quality care for Autistics in psychiatric settings. 000042761 540__ $$fCC BY 000042761 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000042761 650__ $$aAutism Spectrum Disorder$$011199 000042761 650__ $$aQuality Improvement$$039456 000042761 650__ $$aEducation, Nursing$$018228 000042761 650__ $$aHospitals, Psychiatric$$020353 000042761 6531_ $$asensory processing dysfunction 000042761 691__ $$aSchool of Nursing$$041370 000042761 7001_ $$aGray, James$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000042761 8564_ $$9d804f87e-51cd-4a32-930c-cbfb2400cd48$$s3439355$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/42761/files/Gray.James.2024.pdf 000042761 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:42761$$pstudent-work 000042761 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations 000042761 981__ $$aPublished$$b2024-03-21
