N2  - This text provides an overview of prominent physicians and faculty members during the first fifty years of the practices within cardiovascular medicine at OHSU, pulling from oral histories, written accounts, and interviews. This field of study became a specialty within internal medicine around World War II, with local groups of medical professionals, including the Portland Heart Club, contributing to the expansion of the study and practice, including open heart surgeries. Due to the increase in surgeries in the 1960s, the mortality rate significantly decreased, and great improvements were made in the field, particularly with innovations in design with cardiac catheters. Significant contributions to the study of heart health led to the development of programs that focused on heart failure, as well as connecting the importance of exercise in combating issues like heart disease. (Originally produced in 2012, this publication was revised in 2015 and in 2016; both of those versions are included here.)
