TY - THES N2 - It is almost impossible at the present time to make an exact count of the persons addicted to narcotics in the United StAtes, or even in one of our large cities because of the social and legal factors tending to make addiction a secret practice. It is believed, however that it is possible by utilizing all of the information now available to delimit the number by certain maximum and minimum figures. With this object in view, a number of the more important narcotic surveys made in recent years were analyzed; also the reports made by agents of the Federal Bureau of Internal Revenue and other persons in the narcotic clinics conducted in different parts of the country; statistics in dose of addiction, world production of narcotics and the quantities imported into this country were compiled and studied. Numerous Physicians in different parts of the country were interviewed in person to ascertain the number of addicts they were treating in the course of their practice. The results of these analyses can be found within this paper.
