Heterogeneity in the existing literature may be attributable to variable definitions of risk (e.g., conflating risk taking with learning) and lack of nuanced assessments of patterns of responding (e.g., variability in risk taking). Nineteen participants (mean age: 26.7, 12 female) completed the Automatic Balloon Analogue Risk Task to assess risk taking behavior, where they inflated a balloon to earn money, but lost their earnings if the balloon exploded. Our findings are consistent with prior studies, showing a positive association between risk taking and alcohol use, and provide new information about how variability in risk taking is linked to heavy alcohol with negative consequences. Longitudinal and mechanistic studies are needed to determine if risk taking is associated with escalating patterns of alcohol use overtime and to identify the biopsychosocial risk factors linked to individual differences in risk-taking behavior. 000043571 540__ $$fCC BY 000043571 542__ $$fIn copyright - joint owners 000043571 650__ $$aRisk-Taking$$025524 000043571 650__ $$aAlcoholism$$014412 000043571 650__ $$aDecision Making$$017417 000043571 650__ $$aImpulsive Behavior$$020731 000043571 650__ $$aSubstance-Related Disorders$$032029 000043571 650__ $$aSurveys and Questionnaires$$025037 000043571 650__ $$aYoung Adult$$038480 000043571 650__ $$aFemale$$018941 000043571 6531_ $$aalcohol 000043571 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000043571 692__ $$aDepartment of Psychiatry$$041443 000043571 7001_ $$aSimpson, Brooke$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043571 7001_ $$aMorales, Angelica$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043571 711__ $$aResearch Week$$uOregon Health and Science University$$d2024 000043571 8564_ $$96134cb38-e614-48a7-a816-74c49d5d11fb$$s70782$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/43571/files/ResearchWeek.2024.Simpson.Brooke.pdf 000043571 980__ $$aResearch Week
