Pediatric research requires parents to provide consent on behalf of their children. To respect the developing autonomy of the child, researchers also seek to obtain child assent for research procedures. In longitudinal research, the extent to which a child understands research procedures changes as the child develops. Thus, researchers must take a developmental approach to obtaining child assent. This resource also considers the evolving role of the parent at each stage in the child assent process. We discuss this resource in the context of published child consent guidelines for longitudinal studies, while emphasizing that a developmental approach to assent procedures must account for neurodevelopmental differences. This summary and contextualization of our work is an important step toward encouraging positive and respectful research experiences for children. 000043603 540__ $$fCC BY 000043603 542__ $$fIn copyright - joint owners 000043603 650__ $$aInformed Consent$$020809 000043603 650__ $$aResearch Subjects$$034688 000043603 650__ $$aChild$$016462 000043603 6531_ $$achild assent 000043603 6531_ $$aneurodevelopment 000043603 6531_ $$achild autonomy 000043603 6531_ $$apediatric research practices 000043603 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000043603 692__ $$aDepartment of Psychiatry$$041443 000043603 7001_ $$aHowery, Amanda N.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043603 7001_ $$aLashley, Olivia J.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043603 7001_ $$aNomura, Olivia K.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043603 7001_ $$aWright, Hanna R.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043603 7001_ $$aWood, Elizabeth K.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043603 7001_ $$aNigg, Joel T.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043603 7001_ $$aGustafsson, Hanna C.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043603 7001_ $$aSullivan, Elinor L.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043603 711__ $$aResearch Week$$uOregon Health and Science University$$d2024 000043603 8564_ $$97b2b336b-ed00-4594-abda-f173f31f9616$$s190220$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/43603/files/ResearchWeek.2024.Howery.Amanda.pdf 000043603 980__ $$aResearch Week
