Treating T. solium taeniasis with anthelminthic medications (AHMs) like niclosamide or praziquantel (PZQ) is essential to prevent NCC. However, co-infections of taeniasis with viable NCC, the presence of living CNS cysts, impose a risk of neurological adverse events with PZQ, complicating treatment decisions. The availability and type of AHMs and lack of feasible diagnostic methods for NCC in community settings is a major challenge in informing anthelminthic treatment decisions, warranting exploration of NCC prevalence among people with taeniasis. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of taeniasis in screened communities and the prevalence of NCC, along with key characteristics, among people with confirmed taeniasis from northern Peru. 000043635 540__ $$fCC BY 000043635 542__ $$fIn copyright - joint owners 000043635 650__ $$aTaenia solium$$035080 000043635 650__ $$aTaeniasis$$026750 000043635 650__ $$aNeurocysticercosis$$032065 000043635 650__ $$aPraziquantel$$024501 000043635 650__ $$aNiclosamide$$022900 000043635 650__ $$aSwine$$026689 000043635 650__ $$aCoinfection$$039691 000043635 650__ $$aCommunicable Diseases$$016934 000043635 650__ $$aEpilepsy$$018531 000043635 651__ $$aPeru$$041104 000043635 6531_ $$apork tapeworm 000043635 6531_ $$aanthelminthic medications 000043635 6531_ $$acommunity-based treatment strategies 000043635 691__ $$aOHSU-PSU School of Public Health$$041366 000043635 7001_ $$aWardle, Melissa$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043635 7001_ $$aAllen, Samantha E.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043635 7001_ $$aBustos, Javier$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043635 7001_ $$aGamboa, Ricardo$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043635 7001_ $$aHall, Eric$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043635 7001_ $$aNeiderhausen, Meike$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043635 7001_ $$aVilchez, Percy$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043635 7001_ $$aGarcia, Hector H.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043635 7001_ $$aO’Neal, Seth E.$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000043635 711__ $$aResearch Week$$uOregon Health and Science University$$d2024 000043635 8564_ $$9d0fe4e31-7e35-44ea-93ea-679f3b05803f$$s242678$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/43635/files/ResearchWeek.2024.Wardle.Melissa.pdf 000043635 980__ $$aResearch Week
