The prevalence of sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBDs), especially obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), among Veterans has increased dramatically since 2010 and continues to rise. Consequently, Veterans’ demand for VA Sleep Medicine Services has also increased during the last 15 years. After the sleep study is completed, the Veteran returns the HSAT recorder back to the VA. However, PSG remains the “gold standard” test for OSA and should be administered with certain patients, including those who have a negative HSAT result, but continue to exhibit symptoms of OSA.
