The Award was established in 1966 by Edmund Hayes in honor of his father, Dr. Edward S. Hayes. Edmund Hayes was also a member of the Advancement Fund Board. The Advancement Fund was established in the 1970's to "encourage, promote, and solicit funds for the benefit of programs of education, patient care, and public service" at UOMS.
