Using cerebellar cultures subjected to oxygen‑glucose deprivation and a mouse model of global ischemia, we found that ischemia rapidly reduces GABAA_AA receptor currents and protein levels in PCs while sparing β1‑containing receptors. The neurosteroid allopregnanolone (ALLO) prevented this ischemia‑induced decline and protected PCs both in vitro and in vivo. ALLO’s protective effects were more pronounced in females at low doses. These findings identify GABAA_AA receptor loss as a key contributor to PC vulnerability and highlight ALLO as a promising therapeutic candidate for ischemic cerebellar injury.}, url = {http://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/653}, doi = {https://doi.org/10.6083/M4GT5K62}, }
