The mechanisms that guide this maturation remain largely unknown but are critical for understanding developmental disorders such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. This work tests the hypothesis that brain‑derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) released from cardiorespiratory afferents drives activity‑dependent development in the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). I show that BDNF is present and released from baroreceptor neurons in patterns mimicking physiological activity and that BDNF influences dendritic growth of NTS neurons. These effects depend strongly on glial interactions, revealing an essential but underappreciated role for glia in shaping dendritogenesis. Together, these findings identify BDNF‑glia interactions as key contributors to maturation of cardiorespiratory pathways. 000000656 540__ $$fCC BY 000000656 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000000656 650__ $$aAstrocytes$$015172 000000656 650__ $$aPressoreceptors$$024581 000000656 650__ $$aCell Culture Techniques$$031208 000000656 650__ $$aDendrites$$017467 000000656 650__ $$aNeuroglia$$022841 000000656 650__ $$aBrain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor$$031432 000000656 650__ $$aSolitary Nucleus$$030060 000000656 6531_ $$abaroreceptors 000000656 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000000656 692__ $$aVollum Institute$$041509 000000656 7001_ $$aMartin, Jessica$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000000656 8564_ $$92faf59a6-e107-45ae-bcbc-f39e2a5c1679$$s2881956$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/656/files/657_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$2872032717acb170a4adf90c6ebc8db00$$31 000000656 905__ $$a/rest/prod/n8/70/zq/89/n870zq89h 000000656 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:656$$pstudent-work 000000656 956__ $$aGet Accessible Copy$$uhttps://ohsu.libwizard.com/f/requestaccessibledocument 000000656 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
