In a cross-sectional study of 413 patients and 45 providers, most reported high comfort discussing substance use, but current drug or alcohol users were significantly less comfortable. Higher patient self-efficacy and activation increased comfort, while provider comfort was linked to caring for highly activated patients. These findings suggest that those most in need of intervention feel least comfortable discussing substance use, highlighting patient activation and provider engagement as key targets for improving communication in HIV care. 000000661 540__ $$fCC BY 000000661 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000000661 650__ $$aAlcohol Drinking$$014403 000000661 650__ $$aCommunication$$016935 000000661 650__ $$aPhysician-Patient Relations$$024113 000000661 650__ $$aHIV Infections$$028555 000000661 650__ $$aSubstance-Related Disorders$$032029 000000661 650__ $$aOutcome Assessment, Health Care$$029660 000000661 650__ $$aSelf Efficacy$$032365 000000661 650__ $$aCross-Sectional Studies$$017206 000000661 6531_ $$adrinking of alcoholic beverages 000000661 6531_ $$ainterpersonal communication 000000661 6531_ $$asubstance abuse 000000661 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000000661 692__ $$aDepartment of Public Health and Preventive Medicine$$041444 000000661 7001_ $$aRay, Moira$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000000661 8564_ $$9c516f869-e193-4d96-a3e6-369d94ad8a01$$s611891$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/661/files/662_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$2b15f60453a5b20d66dcf37c47428c1f6$$31 000000661 905__ $$a/rest/prod/cv/43/nw/85/cv43nw85w 000000661 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:661$$pstudent-work 000000661 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
