This work examined whether apoE isoforms and reactive oxygen species (ROS) contribute to radiation‑induced cognitive outcomes in female mice and whether effects differ by radiation type. ApoE4 mice showed improved spatial memory after ¹³⁷Cs irradiation, accompanied by enhanced PMA‑induced ROS, while apoE2 mice did not. In contrast, ⁵⁶Fe irradiation did not enhance spatial memory but improved contextual fear conditioning without increasing ROS. These findings demonstrate that cognitive effects of irradiation depend on apoE isoform, radiation type, and memory domain, and highlight a role for stimulus‑induced ROS in radiation‑related cognitive changes. 000000693 540__ $$fCC BY 000000693 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000000693 650__ $$aApolipoproteins E$$014992 000000693 650__ $$aCranial Irradiation$$029107 000000693 650__ $$aCognition$$016868 000000693 650__ $$aHippocampus$$020217 000000693 650__ $$aMice$$036842 000000693 650__ $$aReactive Oxygen Species$$029926 000000693 650__ $$aSpatial Memory$$040736 000000693 650__ $$aReactive Oxygen Species$$029926 000000693 650__ $$aAnimals, Laboratory$$014782 000000693 650__ $$aApolipoprotein E4$$037353 000000693 650__ $$aApolipoprotein E2$$037354 000000693 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000000693 692__ $$aDepartment of Behavioral Neuroscience$$041394 000000693 7001_ $$aVillasana, Laura$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000000693 7201_ $$aRaber, Jacob$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eMentor 000000693 8564_ $$995d40afb-be9a-441f-aaf1-f3c0f6db0a84$$s16583165$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/693/files/694_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$287fe76da985c1cbde1389737aae9da4c$$31 000000693 905__ $$a/rest/prod/1n/79/h4/31/1n79h431q 000000693 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:693$$pstudent-work 000000693 956__ $$aGet Accessible Copy$$uhttps://ohsu.libwizard.com/f/requestaccessibledocument 000000693 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
