Individuals with FASD have a variety of Central Nervous System dysfunctions, including impulsivity, difficulties with abstract thinking, problems with memory, and learning disabilities. FASD is highly prevalent throughout the world; in the United States alone, it is estimated that 24-48 in 1,000 individuals have FASD. While the mechanisms underlying the response of the developing brain to gestational ethanol exposure are not fully understood, a potential mechanism is tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), which is upregulated by ethanol, both in vivo and in vitro. The experiments in this dissertation examined the hypothesis that gestational ethanol exposure alters neuronal morphology, and that this alteration is, in part, due to astrocyte-mediated increases in tPA caused by ethanol. 000007516 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000007516 650__ $$aFetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders$$040252 000007516 650__ $$aHippocampus$$020217 000007516 650__ $$aTissue Plasminogen Activator$$024249 000007516 650__ $$aEthanol$$014406 000007516 650__ $$aCholine$$016602 000007516 6531_ $$aneuronal morphology 000007516 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000007516 692__ $$aDepartment of Behavioral Neuroscience$$041394 000007516 7001_ $$aGoeke, Calla M. 000007516 8564_ $$920e13a81-0ba5-43b6-85dc-d46de4fabc8e$$s2365303$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/7516/files/goeke.calla.2019.pdf 000007516 905__ $$a/rest/prod/x3/46/d4/72/x346d472h 000007516 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:7516$$pstudent-work 000007516 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
