Using zebrafish, we characterized two agouti proteins, AgRP and AgRP2. AgRP2, expressed in the pineal gland and regulated by light, antagonizes MC1R and mediates background adaptation via pineal-hypothalamic signaling independent of retinal input. AgRP neurons, unlike in mammals, directly project to the pituitary, influencing multiple endocrine axes and somatic growth through MC4R suppression. These findings reveal novel roles for AgRP2 in light-responsive pigmentation and demonstrate hypophysiotropic melanocortin regulation of growth and energy balance in teleosts, highlighting key evolutionary differences from mammals. 000000752 540__ $$fCC BY 000000752 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000000752 650__ $$aAgouti-Related Protein$$037800 000000752 650__ $$aZebrafish$$028076 000000752 650__ $$aPro-Opiomelanocortin$$024602 000000752 650__ $$aMelanocortins$$037410 000000752 650__ $$aPigmentation$$024154 000000752 650__ $$aMSH Release-Inhibiting Hormone$$022481 000000752 650__ $$aPro-Opiomelanocortin$$024602 000000752 6531_ $$azebra danio 000000752 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000000752 692__ $$aDepartment of Cell, Developmental and Cancer Biology$$041399 000000752 7001_ $$aZhang, Chao$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000000752 8564_ $$93c6acec3-04a1-4362-97cd-b7ce2ced7893$$s4689234$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/752/files/755_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$26aba924aad102f65a168a153b79b2ed5$$31 000000752 905__ $$a/rest/prod/r2/07/tp/35/r207tp357 000000752 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:752$$pstudent-work 000000752 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
