By 2050, the number of citizens age 65 or older is expected to increase to 83.7 million, more than double the age group population in the 2010 census. The leading causes of death in people age 65 and greater are malignant neoplasm and chronic disease, often requiring rigorous long-term treatment and close medical care. As the older population grows, the cost of healthcare during the last years of life falls heavily on Medicare. The incidence of admissions to the intensive care unit during the last month of life has continued to increase over time. Unfortunately, many of these hospital visits entail aggressive life supporting measures that function only to prolong the dying process at a large financial cost. 000007606 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000007606 650__ $$aAdvance Directives$$028977 000007606 650__ $$aAdvance Care Planning$$034416 000007606 650__ $$aNurse Practitioners$$023075 000007606 651__ $$aOregon$$041094 000007606 691__ $$aSchool of Nursing$$041370 000007606 7001_ $$aAlston, Beth$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000007606 8564_ $$9e2b7e27f-f3fe-415f-ae59-d376e7b65715$$s304760$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/7606/files/Alston.Beth.2017.pdf 000007606 905__ $$a/rest/prod/z8/90/rt/70/z890rt70w 000007606 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:7606$$pstudent-work 000007606 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
