This 12-year cohort study examined associations between objectively measured neighborhood walkability and gait speed among 1,256 older women in Portland, Oregon. Using latent growth models, baseline walkability was not linked to initial gait speed or its decline. However, increases in walkability—greater street connectivity, land-use mix, and transit access—were significantly associated with slower gait speed decline (b = .024, p = .020). No associations were found for park proximity. Findings suggest improving walkability may help preserve mobility and reduce disability risk. 000000764 540__ $$fCC BY 000000764 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000000764 650__ $$aResidence Characteristics$$025341 000000764 650__ $$aEnvironment Design$$018488 000000764 650__ $$aLower Extremity$$034620 000000764 650__ $$aGait$$019340 000000764 650__ $$aWomen$$027986 000000764 650__ $$aAged$$014351 000000764 650__ $$aLeg$$021364 000000764 650__ $$aEnvironment and Public Health$$018487 000000764 650__ $$aAging$$014358 000000764 650__ $$aExercise$$028419 000000764 650__ $$aCohort Studies$$028327 000000764 650__ $$aWalking Speed$$012095 000000764 691__ $$aSchool of Nursing$$041370 000000764 7001_ $$aNagel, Corey$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000000764 7201_ $$aMessecar, Deborah$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eChair 000000764 8564_ $$9729d656c-5f11-4877-aabc-eb3c8f08449e$$s3314092$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/764/files/767_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$2aab325d7abece302f0aa3f3b9537c8f7$$31 000000764 905__ $$a/rest/prod/ww/72/bb/55/ww72bb552 000000764 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:764$$pstudent-work 000000764 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
