TY - GEN N2 - Although Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) rates have dropped for the first time in the United States, there are still patients who remain at high risk for acquiring HIV due to sexual practices. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 1 in 6 men who have sex with men (MSM) will be diagnosed with HIV in their lifetime. Some patients, as well as some clinicians, are not aware of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a medication that can be prescribed to reduce the risk of HIV acquisition. The purpose of this doctoral project was to improve patient outcomes in the Oregon MSM population by conducting a statewide assessment of HIV PrEP understanding and prescribing practices among primary care providers in Oregon.
