In addition to the near-total ubiquity of smart phone touchscreen technologies, specialized communication tools for people with disabilities have exhibited a similar growth in research and adoption. While language technology is known to be a crucial feature in these text entry tools, its specific application is not always deeply studied. In this dissertation, I will explicitly examine the constraints and opportunities afforded by incrementality as they apply to language technology for text entry. In particular, I will explore user-directed text revision and error correction in these tools. 000007882 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000007882 650__ $$aText Messaging$$039698 000007882 650__ $$aDeep Learning$$012734 000007882 650__ $$aBrain-Computer Interfaces$$040031 000007882 650__ $$aCommunication Aids for Disabled$$016936 000007882 650__ $$aNatural Language Processing$$022716 000007882 650__ $$aSupervised Machine Learning$$011452 000007882 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000007882 692__ $$aCenter for Spoken Language Understanding$$041388 000007882 7001_ $$aFowler, Andrew$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000007882 7201_ $$aBedrick, Steven$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eAdvisor 000007882 7201_ $$aRoark, Brian$$uGoogle$$7Personal$$eCollaborator 000007882 7201_ $$aFried-Oken, Melanie$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eCommittee member 000007882 7201_ $$aHeeman, Peter$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eCommittee member 000007882 7201_ $$aSong, Xubo$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eCommittee member 000007882 7201_ $$aZhai, Shumin$$uGoogle$$7Personal$$eCollaborator 000007882 8564_ $$90d84e491-906a-4349-b408-e8ce0c2fff4c$$s1368947$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/7882/files/Fowler.Andrew.2020.pdf$$ePublic$$287c0b5ac58ae38cefcfa08c87f7e71cf$$31 000007882 905__ $$a/rest/prod/vx/02/1f/77/vx021f77g 000007882 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:7882$$pstudent-work 000007882 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
