TY - GEN AB - The auditory system uses sound to guide behavior. However, the aspects of the sensory environment that are relevant to an organism's behavioral goals change over time. How does the brain allow us to understand the words of one particular speaker in a conversation-filled room, or tune out ambient noise as we drift to sleep? In this dissertation, we explore the source of this flexibility by examining how attention and arousal affect neural activity in one region of the brain that processes sound.
