Using inbred C57BL/6J mice, this thesis examined environmental contributions to individual differences in novelty-induced locomotion. Mice were classified as high responders (HR) or low responders (LR) and compared across neurochemical and hormonal measures. HRs and LRs showed distinct regulation of medial prefrontal cortex glutamate, differing in presynaptic and extracellular glutamate responses, including differential sensitivity to repeated phencyclidine administration. In contrast, corticosterone responses to novelty did not differ between groups. These findings indicate that novelty-induced locomotor differences are linked to glutamatergic regulation rather than stress reactivity. 000000810 540__ $$fCC BY 000000810 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000000810 650__ $$aIndividuality$$020758 000000810 650__ $$aGlutamic Acid$$031020 000000810 650__ $$aMicrodialysis$$030059 000000810 650__ $$aPhencyclidine$$023931 000000810 650__ $$aMicroscopy$$022282 000000810 650__ $$aPrefrontal Cortex$$029938 000000810 650__ $$aGlutamates$$019605 000000810 650__ $$aSubstance-Related Disorders$$032029 000000810 650__ $$aMice, Inbred C57BL$$022241 000000810 650__ $$aMice$$036842 000000810 650__ $$aLocomotion$$021605 000000810 650__ $$aStress, Physiological$$026467 000000810 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000000810 692__ $$aDepartment of Behavioral Neuroscience$$041394 000000810 7001_ $$aMcCarthy, Kristin$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354 000000810 7201_ $$aMeshul, Charles$$uOregon Health and Science University$$041354$$7Personal$$eChair 000000810 8564_ $$9fe1edbca-1a76-4d15-9ec4-5343d96bf38b$$s1913313$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/810/files/813_etd.pdf$$ePublic$$27bc9a44e9d70f9845919dc36ec639854$$31 000000810 901__ $$a<p>These documents are archival records.
