However, extreme or chronic exposure, i.e. trauma, can lead to debilitating disorders such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Symptoms of PTSD include nightmares of the trauma, general cognitive dysfunction, changes in arousal, and avoidance behavior. Previous research has demonstrated that 30-70% of the variation in PTSD can be explained by heritability. Recent work shows that the genetic factor, apolipoprotein E (apoE) may differentially influence PTSD susceptibility and symptom severity. ApoE helps regulate lipid transport and metabolism throughout the body, including the brain. It exists in humans as three isoforms: E2, E3, and E4. Both mouse models and human studies have shown that carrying the E2 allele corresponds to greater PTSD-related symptoms and in humans, greater susceptibility after trauma. However, other studies have found conflicting evidence and suggest the association between apoE isoform and PTSD is still unclear. 000008572 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000008572 650__ $$aBehavior$$015411 000008572 650__ $$aApolipoproteins E$$014992 000008572 650__ $$aMice$$036842 000008572 6531_ $$apsychological stress 000008572 6531_ $$aposttraumatic stress disorder 000008572 6531_ $$a7-ketocholesterol 000008572 6531_ $$aptsd 000008572 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000008572 692__ $$aDepartment of Behavioral Neuroscience$$041394 000008572 7001_ $$aTorres, Eileen R.S. 000008572 8564_ $$927fb0acd-5c5f-4146-b20f-0454dc85f5ea$$s4994554$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/8572/files/Torres.Eileen.2020.pdf 000008572 905__ $$a/rest/prod/kk/91/fm/09/kk91fm098 000008572 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:8572$$pstudent-work 000008572 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
