Significant knowledge gaps exist in understanding the burden of hearing loss and the associations between military exposures and hearing both during and after service. Moreover, little is known about the causal mechanisms that can explain these effects. Evidence that helps fill these gaps will aid the Departments of Defense (DoD) and Veterans Affairs (VA) in designing effective interventions and rehabilitation programs. The overall goal of this dissertation was to estimate: 1) the prevalence of hearing loss by severity; 2) rates of hearing changes during military service as a consequence of occupational noise exposure; and 3) mechanisms of the effect of blast exposure on self-reported hearing difficulty. These aims were designed to rigorously yield practically useful information with the goal of improving hearing health and guiding policy. 000008717 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000008717 650__ $$aHearing$$019916 000008717 650__ $$aHumans$$020376 000008717 650__ $$aMilitary Personnel$$022316 000008717 650__ $$aVeterans$$027802 000008717 6531_ $$aposttraumatic stress disorders 000008717 6531_ $$aptsd 000008717 6531_ $$aoccupational noise 000008717 691__ $$aOHSU-PSU School of Public Health$$041366 000008717 7001_ $$aReavis, Kelly M. 000008717 8564_ $$9e7ce159c-7c07-4596-9978-3b7fe8fd59e0$$s2697536$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/8717/files/Reavis.Kelly.2020.pdf 000008717 905__ $$a/rest/prod/3t/94/5r/58/3t945r582 000008717 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:8717$$pstudent-work 000008717 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations 000008717 980__ $$aDual Author Affiliations Cleanup
