000009076 520__ $$aPostpartum is characterized as the recovery period after birth and is also an important time for family bonding, which is critical for the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of the birthing person.  However, many perinatal complications manifest in the postpartum period such as infection, anemia, incontinence, pituitary failure, infertility and depression; including severe postpartum depression or PTSD.  Lactation, bonding with the newborn, perineal or incisional pain or sub-optimal healing can be worsened by a traumatic perinatal experience.
