000009087 520__ $$aAcute painful episodes experienced in hospital settings leads to fear, avoidance of future medical care, and creates gaps in those who suffer from chronic illnesses yet pain continues to be under recognized and undertreated. Nurses often do not practice at the extent of their scope as it relates to treating and addressing pain. The purpose of this project is to develop and implement a policy, education, and demonstration of using nitrous oxide for pain management with pediatric patients undergoing minor painful procedures. Findings from this quality improvement initiative indicate the policy development, education and demonstration of nitrous oxide use with pediatric nurses and pediatricians was effective, but nurses continued to experience hesitancy in using this pain modality. Follow up education and additional PDSA cycles are recommended to ensure patients' pain is mitigated and nurses are practicing to their full scope of practice.
