They are most commonly caused by antipsychotic medications which are used to treat a number of different psychiatric conditions. Drug-induced movement disorders range from barely noticeable or uncomfortable to life-threatening. Collaboration between nurses and providers is crucial in order to accurately assess and provide timely evidence-based treatment to patients. As nursing education is generalist in nature, more specialized training on drug-induced movement disorders is needed for nurses working in psychiatric hospitals.
