This devastating state of malnutrition is brought about by a synergistic combination of decreased appetite and increase in metabolism of fat and lean body mass. The severity of cachexia is often the primary determining factor in both quality of life and ultimate survival. There are currently no effective treatments for cachexia, and its mechanisms are poorly understood. Our lab has previously elucidated the actions of inflammatory cytokines, including IL-1β and TNF-α, on hypothalamic neurons and their roles in driving cachexia symptoms. However, chronic administration of these cytokines results in desensitization and loss of cachexia symptoms, demonstrating canonical inflammatory cytokines alone are insufficient for sustaining cachexia. These observations and more demonstrate that the molecular pathways responsible for driving chronic central nervous system (CNS) derangement and cachexia symptoms remain unknown. 000009186 542__ $$fIn copyright - single owner 000009186 650__ $$aPancreatic Neoplasms$$023517 000009186 650__ $$aCachexia$$015945 000009186 650__ $$aLipocalin-2$$011679 000009186 650__ $$aHead and Neck Neoplasms$$019866 000009186 6531_ $$acognitive decline 000009186 6531_ $$acancer 000009186 691__ $$aSchool of Medicine$$041369 000009186 7001_ $$aOlson, Brennan G. 000009186 8564_ $$9df4546fa-ca41-4525-a50b-08e1672b23c1$$s8422182$$uhttps://digitalcollections.ohsu.edu/record/9186/files/Olson.Brennan.2021.pdf 000009186 905__ $$a/rest/prod/3x/81/6n/48/3x816n482 000009186 909CO $$ooai:digitalcollections.ohsu.edu:9186$$pstudent-work 000009186 980__ $$aTheses and Dissertations
