000000935 520__ $$aAccess to dental care remains a critical issue for over 500,000 Oregonians, with many low-income individuals relying on volunteer dentists through programs such as Medical Teams International’s (MTI) Mobile Dental Program. This study examined trends in volunteerism from 2003 to 2012, factors influencing dentist participation, and strategies to improve retention. Program growth declined significantly over time (p=0.012), with a small group of dentists covering most clinics. Survey and focus group data identified key motivators (“making a difference,” professional responsibility) and barriers (alternative volunteer opportunities, inadequate facilities). Logistic regression revealed retirement status (OR=6.59) and faith (OR=3.51) as significant predictors of volunteer frequency. Findings suggest external factors drive declining volunteerism, but targeted program improvements could help restore growth.
