The subsequent uptake and concentration of these toxic substances by living organisms is cause for concern. Two groups of chemicals, the chlorinated hydrocarbon pesticides and organo-mercury compounds, are examples of environmental pollutants that can be concentrated in biological systems and which are potentially toxic to man.
